a denver tv station said they were trying to investigate a second person in the case. they said this individual is an acquaintance of james holmes and they are trying to track down a classmate of holmes. but they don't believe he was involved in the attack. a semi automatic assault rifle jammed causing the gunman to switch to another weapon that had less fire power. a bomb squad detonated a booby trap in his third floor apartment. once inside, they removed improvised grenades and explosives and other material. demolition experts took them to a disposal site and burned them. it was calculated, contributed and took months to plan. >> staying together, loving one another. being there for one another.

it started at 54th avenue around 10:00 p.m. the officer tried to pull over a van for his seat belt violation. as the officer was chasing the van. a black acura pulled up behind him and rear ended him and shot out the back window. >> goes to show you the danger that a lot of officers are facing now in this climate where motorists are shooting at officers. there is never a valid reason for shooting at an officer. >> they then went the wrong way and ditched the car and ran off. officers say the achara has been stolen. and they did -- the acura was stolen. whoever shot a 5-year-old girl in the next at a drive by shooting t happened near been croft and the girl was walking to get ice cream with a relative when someone in a gold colored lexus sedan opened fire. officers say the intended

beaver stadium. it as target for critics after an investigative report alleged a cover up that allowed assistant coach jerry sandusky to continue molesting boys. >> the president said it as obstacle to healing and leaving it would make it a recurring wound to victims of child abuse. they would store the statue in a secure location. norway is reflecting object its own tragedy one year ago today. 77 people died in the twin attacks. the suspect detonated a bomb killing eight people. he then went to a youth camp on a nearby island and opened fire killing 69 more. terrified teenagers jumped in the water to escape the barrage of bullets. >> he is facing terrorism charges. a south florida radio station received a letter containing a white powder.

it happened at the northern police station on fillmore. someone in the department made the discovery while sorting through the mail. >> in the mail was an envelope addressed to the station here. and it contained some white powder that spilled out. >> officers cleared out the building and called the fire department to investigate. they said the white powder was not hazardous and did identify the substance. in union city, berkeley. and sand leandro all received an envelope with nontoxic white powder inside. san francisco will be getting big time money. they are meeting with ed lee tomorrow morning. they plan to make a major transportation funding announcement. officials from muny and ac transit will be there. the announcement is set for 10:30 a.m. at civic center plaza. >> they say the wind is making it difficult to control a fire

outside the san francisco bay. san francisco right now. 64 degrees. vigil is planned tonight in aurora, colorado. >> to will talk to shooting victims and their -- president obama will talk to shooting victims. and we have our reporter near the booby trapped apartment. >> reporter: it is interesting. people in the neighborhood went about their lives. a person they didn't notice. the quiet guy who kept to himself. he was busy mailing. purchasing things on line. receiving shipments. and planning his attack and rigging up the apartment behind me to be a death trap. some of what we know was in the apartment. 30 homemade explosives. they were retrofitted out of of fireworks. >> different types of bombs that involved chemicals that would explode when they were mixed. >> trip wire in front of the door that would trigger one

bomb and the living room is crisscrossed that went into a central control panel. >> what they did, they went in through the window and used a robot that did some of the work and kept people out of harm's way. sometimes they encased the explosives with water and in other cases they used water to last into the control panel and short out the control panel. they got to a point where they could go inside the apartment. they carried the explosives and put them in the back of a dump truck filled with sand to minimize the amount of jostling when they drove them to a like caution south of here where all the explosion sieves were destroyed in a controlle -- controlled environment. >> they started pulling out evidence. they did pull out a laptop computer and a hard drive. that should really prove to and pressure trove of evidence. start detailing the purchases

parishioners to play for the victims and their familiars but the -- families but the shooter. he said it is hard to make sense of the viewl lens. >> making any sense of it is futile and they are leaving it to god. >> just hoping for the families to get passed all this. the without too much trauma which they already had. can't do much more than that. >> reporter: st. mary's will be offering special prayers for the people in colorado at all the masses today. >> channel 2 news. two teenage sisters at san rafael were they movie theater during the shooting and are lucky to get out alive. they were sitting in theater eight, which shares a wall with theater nine where the gunman opened fire. a bullet fragment went through the wall and hit a friend in the arm one row behind them. >> the instinct was get out.

yesterday danville community church was filled for peter and mona. they died last weekend when their small plane crashed. he was a developer and bang director. his wife an interior designer. the friends say the two were active in the community and touched many lives. >> they meant a whole lot to a lot of people. church wise. community wise. >> they had a lot of integrity and they loved them a lot. >> they leave behind three grown children. the cause of the crash is still being investigated. >> dozens of people are remembering a toddler caught in the crossfire in november. >> supporting the community. and i live in east oakland. so i was kind of wanting to do something for the summer. >> i come out here and it is important to have the community sense. >> people hopped on bikes and took part in the ride for peace. >> organizers offered support

to the parents of hiram lawrence junior. he was a 23-month-old boy shot and killed outside of a liquor store. >> the mayor also attended the event. >> they paused to remember fallen heros. the fire protection district held a ceremony yesterday at the training division station on treat boulevard. a memorial list the names of 16 members of the fire district who died in the line of duty since 1969. it was five years ago yesterday that captain matt burton and fire engineer scott desmond died fighting a fire in the unincorporated village. they were killed trying to save two elderly people who also died in the fire. this is now open on the shoreline of palo alto. it had been closed to the public because it used to be a dump site for toxic waste. now the public can enjoy the area. the 9-acre park doubled the

park land in east palo alto. there was an unwelcome shopper at a pennsylvania mall yesterday. check it out. people were evacuated after the bear cub was spotted running through an automated door into a sears store. he then became stuck in the lobby area of the store. they responded and tranquilized the bear. it was wearing a track being color but they -- collar. but they haven't identified where he came from yet. art work made out of sand. one of the largest sand sculpturing contests in the country. a drop in the area. we will have a look at the numbers.

during his sunday blessing, the pope said he was praying for the aurora shooting victims. pope benedict 16er said he was leaply shocked by the senseless violence in the theater on friday and offered his prayers from rome this morning. he said he was praying for consolation and strength from god. here in the bay area parishioners are also praying for the victims of the colorado shooting. at st. mary's catholic church in walnut creek, special prayers are being offered through today's masses and throughout the week. they encourage people to pray for the victims, their families and the shooter. >> i think one of the beautiful or very strong tools that someone can use is, of course, prayer, and pray to god not only for himself or herself, but for everyone. >> the deacon says prayer is often the only way people can find a way to cope. colorado authorities have now released the names of all

downtown oakland. they include parts of telegraph avenue, broadway, san pablo avenue and 17 through 20th streets. perimeters and barricades will be set up from early morning to around 10:00 tomorrow night. new this morning, the statue of joe paterno no longer stands on the penn state university campus. early this morning, police and construction workers put up a fence around that statue, and covered the area with a blue tarp while they worked to take it down. it had become a target for critics after an investigation alleged a cover-up by paterno that allowed assistant coach jerry sandusky -- penn state's president issued a statement this morning saying the statue had become an obstacle to healing and said it was in the best interest to remove that statue and store it in a secure location. the n.c.a.a. says it will levy corrective and punitive measures against penn state related to that child sex abuse schedule caused by former football assistant coach jerry sandusky. we'll get a better idea of the

sanctions against the school tomorrow. they may go so far as to shut down penn state's football program. someone shot at a c.h.p. officer as he was chasing a van overnight. it started in oakland near 54th avenue and international boulevard. the officer tried to pull over a van for a seat belt violation. and as the officer was chasing that van, a black acura pulled up behind him, rear-ended him several times, and shot the back window out. >> it just goes to show you the danger that a lot of officers are facing now in this climate, where motorists are just shooting at officers for no valid reason. there is never a valid reason to shoot at an officer. >> the officer was not hurt. the van and the acura drivers then went the wrong way on interstate 880, ditched the cars at an exit and ran away. officers say the acura had been stolen. they detained two people but have not reported any arrests.

that fire fight. right now that fire is about 15% contained. they were called to fight a fire, and ended up finding dozens of pot plants. firefighters found about 100 marijuana plants inside a petaluma home early yesterday morning. the electrical panel of the home on yarbury drive caught fire. firefighters say people live living inside that house had spliced into the electrical service to grow marijuana. another letter containing white powder. it happened yesterday morning at the northern police station on filmore. a police station someone made the discovery while sorting through the mail. >> the envelope was addressed to this station here and it contained white powder that spilled out. >> officers cleared the building and called the fire department to investigation. firefighters said the powder wasn't hazardous, but did not identify the substance. on friday, police departments in union city, berkeley, oakland, hayward and san

a motorcyclist died after crashing into a van in san francisco. it happened around 9:15 yesterday morning at cesar chavez and pennsylvania streets. investigators say the motorcyclist was headed east on cesar chavez when he hit a van head on. the motorcyclist died at the scene, and the driver of the van stopped and is cooperating with police. we're now learning that hours after the deadly shooting in aurora, there was a scare at a dark knight rises movie screening in arizona. police say this man michael bravoah appeared to be intoxicated and was carrying a large backpack and acting strangely in the theater. his behavior worried some people and when someone confronted him about it, some 50 people ran from that theater. several off duty border patrol agents removed him from the theater and he was arrested on disorderly conduct charges. a teen choice awards preparty had to be shut down

at 2:30 this afternoon pacific time. he will speak with victims, their families, as well as government officials. meanwhile, suspect james holmes will appear in court at 8:30 tomorrow morning pacific time. he will be told he is the focus of the investigation, and to learn about conditions for his detention. also, a short time go holmes's former school university of colorado denver announced that it is investigating whether he could have obtained explosive materials through his position as a grad student there. police say holmes received deliveries during four months to his home and at the school. a university spokesperson says that the university will now check in on those packages. he withdrew from the school's p.h.d. neuro science program without giving a reason. a bomb squad detonated a boobytrap inside holmes's third floor apartment yesterday. once inside technicians improved improvised explosives,

grenade, trip wires and other hazardous materials. demolition experts took the explosive to a disposal site and burned them. investigators say the theater attack was calculated, it was deliberate, and took months to plan. there will be a vigil tonight for the victims of the theater shooting. there is a growing memorial near the movie complex where that shooting took place. residents have been gathering outside the theater to pay respects to those who were killed or wounded in the shooting. >> it hit close to home. we never thought in a million years something like this would hit that close. >> the man you just heard from, gary ford is an army r.o.t.c. member and he worked with alex sullivan. one of the shooting victims who did not survive. he also says he knows many of the members of the military who were killed and injured there, as well. >>this morning we're hearing heroic and heartbreaking stories about each aurora shooting victim who died. matt mcquinn died trying to protect his girlfriend who survived. a.j. boik was planning on going to college in the fall.

branoff. they died last weekend when their small plane crashed in central utah. peter was a developer and bank director. his wife was an interior designer. their friends say the two were active in the community, and they both touched many lives. >> they meant a whole lot to a lot of people. i think business wise, church wise, community wise, they had a lot of integrity, a lot of people loved them a lot and respected them a lot. >> the branoffs leave behind three grown children. a fund raiser is being held this afternoon for a concord girl who lost part of her family in a crash. hannah nurry's sister and father were killed on april 7th. a 17-year-old driver crashed into them on treat boulevard while they were riding their bikes according to police. the district attorney is expected to decide whether to charge that teenager soon. today's fund-raiser to raise money for hannah nurry's education is from 3 to 5:00 at wood side elementary in concord.

coach jerry sandusky. this morning the school removed its famous statue of former head coach joe paterno. new video is coming in from norway as that country continues to recover from its tragedy one year ago today. norway's prime sister led norway's prime minister led a solemn ceremony this morning, and there was a private ceremony on the island where 69 people were shot and killed during a youth camp. the suspect is on trial facing voluntary homicide and terrorism charges. a report out today claims there is a cover-up at the japanese nuclear power plant, crippled by last year's earthquake and tsunami. the fukushima plant experienced several melt-downs following the march, 2011 disaster. the japanese government accuses subcontractors of forcing workers to underreport the amount of radiation they were exposed to so that they could stay on the job longer. inspectors estimate it will take 40 years to de commission

the plant's four wrecked reactors. three russian officials have been detained for questioning for not warning people to evacuate before a major flood. 171 people were killed earlier this month because of floods, including 153 in just one town. the mayor of that town is among the three people being detained for questioning. versus investigators say the officials were warned of possible flooding but didn't order evacuations. the worst rain in 60 years in beijing, china has triggered flooding. 20 deaths have been blamed on the storm including 10 in beijing. more than 50,000 have been evacuated and over 500 flights were cancelled leaving thousands stranded at the main airport. a man believed to have stabbed three homeless people in los angeles has turned himself in. officers arrested the man [ audio difficulties ] frid. the commander of the l.a.p.d. described the gruesome crimes. >> all three victims were sleeping at the time.

atlanta earlier this month when he was hit by a jet ski. he was transported to the hospital with a series head injury -- serious head injury and dyed yesterday. he is the son of usherrer's ex- wife. sage stallone has been laid to rest in los angeles. yesterday actor sylvester stallone mourned the death of his 36-year-old son surrounded by family and friends. a number of people also showed up offering their support to the family. they said they wanted to be there because of rumors about people from the westboro baptist church from kansas who were going to hold a protest. sage's body was found by the housekeeper on july 13th. people in arizona are cleaning up after a huge dust storm. it blanketed phoenix yesterday causing zero visibility in some areas. high winds made the problem worse. the dust storm eventually turned into thunderstorms. similar scenes occur throughout arizona during what is known as monsoon season. on wednesday, governor jerry brown and interior secretary ken salazar are expected to reveal details about a proposal to build a tunnel system to carry more water from the sacramento san

will be there as well. the largest event of its kind in the east bay will begin in a few minutes. 35 bay area animal rescue groups and shelters will take part in the adopt-a-thon. it's billed as the largest event of its kind in the east bay. the event begins in a few minutes and runs until 3:00 in the afternoon. there will be more than 300 animals up for adocks, including cat -- adoption. including cats and dogs, rabbits, birds and represent tiles. there is a dog training demonstration and a meet and greet with the oakland police k9 unit. today another sunday streets in san francisco. today's event is in the bay view, dog patch and mission bay neighborhoods, third street between king street and knew come avenue will be closed. it starts at 11 this morning and will end at 4 this afternoon. now if you're headed there there will also be free dental screenings for kids at this sunday streets event. u.c.s.f. dental students will give the screenings and they'll take about 15 minutes per child. you don't have to make an
